How much should I tip?

Tipping is always up to you. Our suggested amounts for guides, drivers, porters, housekeeping and restaurants, in US dollars.

Tipping is appreciated in Costa Rica and always up to you. Here is what we suggest, in US dollars:

  • Tour guides: US$ 5 to 10 per person, per tour. A bit more for a full day or a guide who went out of their way.
  • Your driver: US$ 20 to 40 for your group for a full day together. Scale it down for a shorter transfer.
  • Hotel porters: US$ 1 to 2 per bag.
  • Housekeeping: US$ 2 to 5 a day.
  • Restaurants: most bills already include a 10% service charge, shown as "servicio", alongside the 13% sales tax. That is the tip, so there is no need to add more unless the service was something special.

Dollars or colones are both fine for tips, which is one more reason to carry a few smaller bills.
