What should I do in an emergency?
Who to call, in what order, and the numbers to save in your phone before you leave home.
- Call 911. Police, ambulance and fire, from any phone in Costa Rica.
- Then call us on +506 8352-9916, by phone or WhatsApp. Outside office hours the same number is answered for anything urgent. If you are still at home, call 1 (800) 996-1139 and press 2.
- Lost passport, or a crime against you? US citizens can call the US Embassy in San José on +506 2519-2000, or +506 2220-3127 after hours.
If something is stolen, report it to the OIJ, Costa Rica's judicial police, and ask for the case number. Your insurer will need it for a claim, and we can help you find the nearest office.
Save these numbers in your phone before you leave home. It takes two minutes. For all the ways to reach us, see How do I reach you while I am in Costa Rica?
