What should I pack?

Less than you think. The things our travelers are always glad they packed, from a light rain jacket to a warm layer for the cloud forest.

Less than you think. Most days you will live in shorts, T-shirts and sandals.

The things people are glad they brought:

  • A light rain jacket. Even in the dry season, the rainforest earns its name.
  • One warm layer and long pants. Arenal and Monteverde evenings are cool, and the cloud forest can be properly cold.
  • Closed shoes you can walk in, for trails, hanging bridges and waterfall hikes, plus sandals or water shoes.
  • Swimsuits, more than one, since things dry slowly in the humidity.
  • Sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent.
  • A small daypack for tours.
  • Binoculars, if you have them. Many nature guides carry a spotting scope, but your own pair makes a big difference between stops.
  • Any medicines you take, in their original packaging, with enough for a few extra days.

Keep a photo of your passport on your phone, separate from the passport itself.

If your trip includes a domestic flight, pack in a soft bag rather than a hard suitcase, and read How much luggage can I take on a domestic flight? before you go.
